![]() ![]() ![]() Yet, this style of horror game was still relatively new at the time. ![]() Likewise, the 2012 horror game “Slender: The Eight Pages” – a creepy game that focused on first-person perspective exploration and avoiding a monster – was also popular amongst horror fans too. The ultra-disturbing narrative-focused horror game “ Amnesia: The Dark Descent” had been released to great acclaim in 2010. In 2013, first-person perspective horror games with unarmed protagonists and a focus on exploration and/or narrative weren’t entirely unheard of. This game flips this on its head and tricks experienced horror genre fans instead.Īnd it probably worked so well because of when the game was released. Not only does this allow for suspense and dramatic contrast, but it is possibly also there to catch naïve audience members by surprise too. In a lot of horror stories, things initially start out normal and then become scary. In addition to perhaps being a nostalgic call-back to horror games of the era like “ Alone In The Dark” (1992), “The 7th Guest” (1993) and maybe “Resident Evil” (1996), it is also a clever inversion of the structure of a typical horror story. Yet, it initially pretends to be a horror game. It was all an elaborate prank on the part of the developers – “Gone Home” isn’t actually a horror game.Īs well as being one of the first serious “1990s nostalgia” games – filled with richly evocative retro details – the actual story of the game is a “serious drama” one, with a romantic plot, that also explores a number of themes and is well-written enough that it will probably make you cry at least once. If all of this is making you tense up in anticipation of a sudden jump scare or a monster that will chase you then, oh boy, are you… going to be disappointed. Again, this place certainly looks creepy…. ![]()
